The BLYTHE SCHOOL of Theatre Dance

We provide classes in ballet, tap, modern stage, singing, drama and musical theatre. Pupils from 2-years-old are welcome in our nursery class, where they can then progress through the grades working up to advanced professional level. We aim to ensure that every pupil is encouraged to reach their full potential by building their confidence and ensuring the emphasis in all classes is on learning whilst having fun.

Classes are held in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with fully qualified and experienced tuition. We offer classes and training for pupils who simply want to dance and have fun, or for pupils who want to pursue a professional career in dance.

Our very youngest pupils enjoy the introductory Nursery class for pre-school children where ballet and tap steps are introduced in a fun environment. Even at this young age, children learn to respond to various styles of music and are taught the basic structure of any dance class. Pupils attending this class may start a series of seven teacher-assisted Rainbow awards.

In the Primary class, children are encouraged to express their enjoyment of dance movements and music whilst developing the technique of basic steps. They become aware of dance terminology and singing lessons are also introduced. Rainbow award examinations will be completed at this level and those attaining the required standard will take Primary examinations.

At this level pupils should show an awareness of improving their technique and understanding of dance. We aim to co-ordinate simple movements and produce combinations of steps. By now pupils should be showing musicality, an enjoyment of dance and be able to dance as individuals as well as in a group and respond to an audience.

In Grade 2, a wide range of new steps are introduced in addition to which pupils continue to develop the technique of steps learnt in previous grades. We prepare for Bronze medal examinations which help with the development of style and a sense of performance.

By Grade 3 pupils are working with an increased vocabulary of steps and movement. Technique should be secure and we aim for increased confidence in performance. Individual styles are clearly developing and we work towards Silver medal examinations.

At this level, with technique well established, pupils greatly extend their knowledge of rhythm. We study many different genres of dance whilst working towards Gold Medal standard, and pupils learn to express their personality through the varied styles of dance and music which they experience.

Students attending these classes have shown a commitment to dance and progress from this stage is very individual. All three disciplines of ballet, tap and modern are still studied as well as singing to offer the best possible opportunity of producing an all round performer. We should see a maturity of style develop, and beyond Gold medal there are a wide range of semi-professional and professional examinations available to students.

Singing classes are run in parallel to dance classes for all students. Pupils are encouraged to perform with confidence from an early age, learning correct technique from the very start. These classes build towards regular vocal performance opportunities and contribute to combined song and dance performances at our showcase.

Our drama classes are offered in courses typically of six to eight weeks based around a specific theme. Pupils of all ages join together and are encouraged to express themselves in a fun and relaxed environment whilst developing their dramatic skills.

We also run two midweek adult classes. 'Adult tap' covers fundamental tap technique through to advanced rhythmic footwork in a sociable atmosphere. This is a fun class where all are welcome regardless of ability. ‘Relax & Stretch’ is based on Pilates technique designed to strengthen core muscles, improve posture and relax the mind. This class is conducted in a calm atmosphere to soothing music and includes floor work.
